Cystic Fibrosis and Cookbook

It's been one crazy week, but the whirlwind hasn't stopped yet. We have some answers regarding Ashley's heath but we still don't have a diagnosis. Ashley's pulmonologist and gastroenterologist are working together to come up with a game plan. Here is what we do know:

Cystic Fibrosis
1. Ashley does not have Cystic Fibrosis.
2. Ashley does have a bacterial infection in her lungs, the new antibiotic she is on will hopefully fight the infection.
3. Ashley's platelet count is 80,000 (normal is 150,000 to 450,000). This is the lowest Ashley platelets have ever been. We are hoping it's because she has an infection and not because she has some internal bleeding.
4. Ashley will have her tonsils and adenoids removed soon. We will be meeting with the Ear Nose and Throat doc sometime next week. Hopefully, we can get the surgery scheduled before the New Year.
5. Despite the low platelets Ashley's liver appears to be happy, as all of her liver enzymes are normal or near normal.
6. Ashley does not have Cystic Fibrosis. Oh I already said that but it's such great news it's worth repeating.

As you can see it's not over. Ashley will still need some more tests to determine what is wrong. It could still be something as simple as gastroesophagael reflux disease or GERD or something as complicated as pulmonary hypertension.

My prayer for the New Year is that we have a diagnosis, it's treatable and Ashley's health becomes stable again. Would you please pray with me?

Cookbooks
There have been some important changes with Ashley's cookbook. Due to the overwhelming response to the cookbook orders we have decided to have Ashley's cookbooks published by a professional company, Morris Press. Because we have decided to move the cookbook production to a professional company, the cookbooks will not be ready before Christmas. Therefore, if you have ordered a cookbook, you will not be getting your cookbook until after the first of the year.

The good news is we can accept more recipes and have a bigger better cookbook. And the process of submitting a recipe has been simplified because Love for Ashley fans will have a private log in at Morris Press that will allow them to submit their own recipe. I will provide you with the log in information in my next post.

The bad news is that by going through the professional company we now have some out of pocket expenses. The cost to get the cookbooks produced will be approximately $1000, we need to come up with half of that cost when our order is placed and then the other half is due at time of shipment. I have one person who has generously offered to pay the first half (thanks Mom) but we still need the other half. If you are willing to donate the other half or if you are willing to donate a small amount to offset the cost, please send me an email to loveashley@loveforashley.com.

I am excited about the new avenue we are pursuing with Ashley's cookbooks. The cookbooks have the potential to be our highest earning fundraiser yet. Thanks to all of you.

ALF vs COTA - Loosing Sleep

What would keep a person up past 3:30 am? Decisions... As most of you know we have been using ALF (American Liver Foundation) for Ashley's Liver Transplant Fund. However, in the past year, we have found that ALF is not offering us what we need among a few other reasons which I will not blog about. When we opened Ashley's account with ALF we did so quickly after the death of my dad during Christmas 2006 and New Year 2007, we did not have time to research the best fundraising organizations. There are so many organizations out there from ALF , COTA , NTAF . But because of my dad's untimely death and because his dying wish was that friends, family, etc. donate to Ashley to help defray our medical costs, the first organization that came to mind was the American Liver Foundation. After all, Ashley does have a liver disease. Now, both my husband and I are wondering if we should have used COTA. We have also thought and inquired about opening up a local trust fund for Ashley. Howeve...

Living through Dance

In just about six weeks Ashley will dance, not just any dance; she will be competing in a big regional dance competition by dancing her very first solo.  It's completely amazing, seeing Ashley dance, watching her live through dance.  When Ashley was born almost 11 1/2 years ago, I never ever thought, we never thought Ashley would live to dance much else do her first solo.  I can't believe I am crying as I type this.  I didn't think I would get emotional.  It's just amazing!  When I put her in dance at age 3, I did it because I knew I needed to stop sheltering her.  She needed to be around other children.  She needed to feel normal despite what is trying to zap the life out of her; despite her disease.  Honestly I never thought Ashley would be a good dancer or even a great dancer, I just knew dancing was safe; it was the one activity the doctors felt didn't put Ashley's life at risk.  Little did I know how much dancing did and still d...
Okay so I made you wait a couple years.  I promise I will try to get better at this.  Now to help  you catch up on what happened in 2018, 2019 and so far in 2020. Let's see...this might be a very short post at least for the years 2018 and 2019.   2018 In 2018, Brad graduated from the Univeristy of Alabama with a BS Degree in Economics and Philosphy in May. He is still dating his high school sweetheart, McKenzie, there is talk of marriage.  After graduation, Brad got a job with Reuters as part of their Graduate Leadership Program.  Then the division of Reuters that Brad worked for became Refinitiv. He lived in NYC for about six weeks for training and then lived in Chicago for about 9 months before they transferred him to Houston to work as a Customer Success Manager in Commodities and Energy. McKenzie also graduated with a BS in Pharmacy but continued with her graduate studies.  Ashley is a Junior in college and she is doing well academically and h...
