Annika turned 8 years old today but her birthday celebration has been postponed. On October 8, little Anni received her third liver transplant. She received her first liver transplant at 12 months old because of biliary atresia. She received her second liver transplant just 3 months after that. Today, Anni is spending her birthday in an ICU room in a Chicago hospital.
Her third liver transplant has not been without setbacks. Annika required 24 units of blood just a few days after her transplant and one of Anni's lungs collapsed. Today, according to Anni's mom, Moreena, Annika is doing better. She still has a long way to go.
