One thing about having a child with a chronic illness is that normal illnesses just love to hang around longer. Ashley came home from school on Wednesday complaining of a headache, I took her temp and it was 101. She had no other symptoms just a fever, so of course we knew she needed to go to the doctor. However, I tried not to panic and decided to just watch her for 24 hours.
On Thursday, her temperature just hovered around 99.5; Ashley's normal is around 97. She did fine most of Thursday but started complaining of a sore throat by late that evening. We woke up Friday with her planning to go back to school and me back to work but not before we went to the doctors just to make sure she didn't have strep throat. Dr. Lacy, Ashley's pediatrician, examined Ashley and didn't see anything in her throat but they did a strep test anyway; it was negative.
Yesterday, Ashley's temp was normal all day, it ranged from 97.3 to 98.6. We thought maybe she was over her cold. We had a nice quite family day after the boys got back from their baseball game, we grilled burgers and watched a movie. It was a nice family evening. Of course, Ashley would have much rather gone to her dance company's Halloween party. We thought it was best to keep her home just to make sure she was over her illness. And I am glad we did because by 9 pm, she was crying because her throat her so bad.
Today, Ashley's fever is back. Although, her temperature is low at 99.9, we are bummed that she just can't seem to shake this cold. Another thing that about having a normal illness with liver diease is that Ashley can't just take any medication. We can't give her Motrin unless absolutely needed (a temperature over 101) and she not allowed to have Tylenol at all. And over-the-counter meds for fever, colds and sorethroats, just don't seem to do the trick. Plus we have no idea what medications are safe for Ashley to take. All we can do is wait it out.
Waiting is hard for me, but it's really hard on Ashley. She is missing out on so much, her brother's baseball games, Halloween Parties, dance, friends and now she just may not be able to go on her class field trip to St. Augustine, Florida. Hopefully, she can shake this virus by Tuesday so she can go on her field trip.
How do you keep a child entertained at home when they are sick? Any ideas, please share?
Hanging in there, Laurie and Ashley too
