Eight Hundred Thirty-Two and Eighty-Seven

Eight hundred and Thirty-Two dollars and Eighty-Seven cents ($837.87), that is what it cost us for Ashley's recent trip Shands Hospital. One trip that only included an MRI with contrast and blood work.

Eight hundred and Thirty-Two dollars and Eighty-Seven sents for an MRI, gas, labs, meals, and parking just for Ashley to be at the hospital for a total of two hours at the least. A visit that takes us all day to complete.

Just one trip! Multiply that amount by 3 or 4 and you might have a better understanding of what we spend out-of-pocket on just Ashley alone for her visits to Shands Hospital Liver Clinic

That's $2,498.61 to $3,331.48 dollars out of our pocket each year just for her trips to Shands. That doesn't include the visits to her pediatrician which can be once a week or labs done at our local Quest Diagnostic Center (at least 6 times a year).

Okay now even more of a shocker...multiply that yearly amount by 11. That's $36,646.28. That's just only a fraction of what we have paid out-of-pocket on Ashley since she was born in July 1998; since she was diagnosed with liver disease.

You can probably take that $36K amount and multiply that by 2, that may get you close to what we spent during Ashley's first two years of life - about $73 thousand dollars.

None of these dollar figures include her medicines, which can run $200 a month.

Folks, this is our out-of-pocket expenses; after insurance claims have been paid. It's crazy stressful.

None of this includes Brad's medical care for his horrible allergies or asthma. It doesn't include dental care; braces or regular check-ups to the dentist. And it doesn't include medical care for Ashley's dad and me.

And what if Ashley were sicker? Can you imagine what our out-of-pocket expenses would be then? I can't, I don't even want to think about it.

How do people manage without healthcare?

Now you know why we are fundraising.

ALF vs COTA - Loosing Sleep

What would keep a person up past 3:30 am? Decisions... As most of you know we have been using ALF (American Liver Foundation) for Ashley's Liver Transplant Fund. However, in the past year, we have found that ALF is not offering us what we need among a few other reasons which I will not blog about. When we opened Ashley's account with ALF we did so quickly after the death of my dad during Christmas 2006 and New Year 2007, we did not have time to research the best fundraising organizations. There are so many organizations out there from ALF , COTA , NTAF . But because of my dad's untimely death and because his dying wish was that friends, family, etc. donate to Ashley to help defray our medical costs, the first organization that came to mind was the American Liver Foundation. After all, Ashley does have a liver disease. Now, both my husband and I are wondering if we should have used COTA. We have also thought and inquired about opening up a local trust fund for Ashley. Howeve...

Living through Dance

In just about six weeks Ashley will dance, not just any dance; she will be competing in a big regional dance competition by dancing her very first solo.  It's completely amazing, seeing Ashley dance, watching her live through dance.  When Ashley was born almost 11 1/2 years ago, I never ever thought, we never thought Ashley would live to dance much else do her first solo.  I can't believe I am crying as I type this.  I didn't think I would get emotional.  It's just amazing!  When I put her in dance at age 3, I did it because I knew I needed to stop sheltering her.  She needed to be around other children.  She needed to feel normal despite what is trying to zap the life out of her; despite her disease.  Honestly I never thought Ashley would be a good dancer or even a great dancer, I just knew dancing was safe; it was the one activity the doctors felt didn't put Ashley's life at risk.  Little did I know how much dancing did and still d...
Okay so I made you wait a couple years.  I promise I will try to get better at this.  Now to help  you catch up on what happened in 2018, 2019 and so far in 2020. Let's see...this might be a very short post at least for the years 2018 and 2019.   2018 In 2018, Brad graduated from the Univeristy of Alabama with a BS Degree in Economics and Philosphy in May. He is still dating his high school sweetheart, McKenzie, there is talk of marriage.  After graduation, Brad got a job with Reuters as part of their Graduate Leadership Program.  Then the division of Reuters that Brad worked for became Refinitiv. He lived in NYC for about six weeks for training and then lived in Chicago for about 9 months before they transferred him to Houston to work as a Customer Success Manager in Commodities and Energy. McKenzie also graduated with a BS in Pharmacy but continued with her graduate studies.  Ashley is a Junior in college and she is doing well academically and h...
